Thanks to the 6/49 Super Lotto draw, a 35-year-old teacher from Rizal province now has enough money to open her own school.

The winner from Binangonan town became the country’s newest millionaire when she hit the P90-million jackpot on June 4.

Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) media officer Joseph Muego told the Inquirer yesterday, June 5, that when the solo jackpot winner claimed the prize at the agency’s office in Pasay City on Wednesday, she told PCSO general manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas: “I could not believe that my P20 turned to millions.”

Muego said that for security seasons, the woman begged off from revealing more details about herself.

The winner told the PCSO officials that she initially placed a bet for Monday’s 6/55 Grand Lotto draw for which she won P20.

But instead of claiming the money, she opted to use the P20 to place another bet for the next day’s 6/49 Super Lotto draw.

The winner added that she never imagined that she would bag the jackpot by betting on her favorite number combination of 20-05-45-35-26-21.

These numbers, she told Rojas, represented the birth dates and ages of her parents.

The winner, who is single, said she would use the money to buy a house for her parents and build a community school, an indication that she wanted to go on teaching.  She added that she would also make a donation to the church.

CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines—A high provincial police official recently convicted of protecting a multi-million-peso  illegal drug manufacturing operation and sentenced to life in prison is ill and his turn over to the court in La Union that tried his case has been delayed, Cavite police director Senior Superintendent Alexander Rafael said Friday.

Senior Superintendent Dionisio Borromeo, currently the deputy police director for administration in Cavite was “ill” and had to stay in his quarters at the provincial camp in Imus City as of Friday, according  Rafael.

Rafael maintained that Borromeo, who is the object of an arrest warrant issued by the La Union Regional Trial Court was now under the Cavite police’s “custody.”

Borromeo and his co-accused, Senior Police Officer 1 Joey Abang were found guilty of protecting a shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) laboratory in Naguilian, La Union that anti-drug operatives discovered in 2008. He was chief of police of Dagupan City in neighboring Pangasinan province at the time.

Borromeo was also ordered to pay a fine P10 million.

“He’s been sick since Monday that was why he went on leave,” Rafael said in a telephone phone interview Friday. He said Thursday that Borromeo was to be transported to La Union later that day.

Rafael said Borromeo filed  medical certificates and furnished the court copies of the documents to back his claim of being ill.

However when asked what particular illness Borromeo had, Rafael said he was not sure as he had not seen yet a copy of the medical certificate.

The arrest warrant was received by the Cavite police on Thursday, the same day Borromeo supposedly “turned himself in” to Rafael.

Rafael said his command would turn over Borromeo to the court and would leave Cavite on Sunday so they would arrive in La Union by Monday.

Gayunman, simulain mo ay ‘di natalo;
Hinangad mong katarungan at pagbabago,

Napuno ang salop, dibdib ng Pilipino.

Kami ngayong mga anak ng lalawigang

MANILA, Philippines - Protesters called the country's freedom "fake" as they slammed the Aquino administration's policies.

During the Independence Day ceremonies in Kawit, Cavite, members of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) criticized programs like the private-public partnership project and the K-12 education system.

They allege PPP only serves the interests of foreign investors while the K-12 program is merely an added burden to the poor. (ANC Dateline Philippines, June 12, 2013)

MANILA, Philippines—President Benigno Aquino III said that now was the time to unite and that the Philippines won’t shirk away from the challenge of defending its sovereignty as he called for unity amid sea disputes with China and other Asian neighbors.

“Now is the time to unite our hearts, unite our minds and our voices,” Aquino said in Filipino during the celebration of the 115th anniversary of Philippine Independence Wednesday, June 12.

“Now is the time for us to move as one nation for the fulfillment of our collective aspirations for the motherland,” he said in his speech after quoting a passage from hero Andres Bonifacio about how it took Filipinos three hundred years before they finally united against the Spanish colonizers.

“I know we can do this because we are a race of heroes,” he added.
