MANILA, Philippines — A suspect in the killing of Batangas Assistant Prosecutor Alexander Sandoval was arrested by the police late Thursday afternoon, June 13, Prosecutor General Claro Arellano said.

He said the suspect, identified as Jayson Espejo Guerrero, was arrested in Taal, Batangas.

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Leila De Lima also on Thursday asked Arellano to determine if Sandoval was handling any sensitive or high profile case.

“It may be helpful in ascertaining the motives for the killing and to relay forthwith such and any other relevant information to the NBI,” De Lima said in a statement referring to the National Bureau of Investigation.

De Lima also appealed to the Philippine National Police to intensify its pursuit operation against those responsible for the killing.

“We also wish to extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to the family and friends of the late Batangas Assistant Provincial Prosecutor Alexander Sandoval. Their loss is the loss of the National Prosecution Service and of the Department,” she said.

Sandoval was shot dead by two men on board a motorcycle in Barangay (village) Muzon in San Luis town around 11 a.m. Thursday.

News: 11-year old New Zealand boy fathers child to 36-year-old woman
June 15, 2013 9:20am

WELLINGTON - An 11-year-old New Zealand boy was reported Saturday to have fathered a child with the 36-year-old mother of a school friend, raising questions on why women cannot be charged with rape in the country.

Counsellors working in the area of child sexual abuse said the case highlighted a lack of attention to women as potential offenders, according to the New Zealand Herald, which reported the story.

The case has also prompted an examination of the law, under which the crime of rape applies only to men.

Justice Minister Judith Collins said she would investigate, the paper reported.

Pero it says a lot.

“Wala namang gulo. Bakit ba kayo naghahanap ng gulo? Gusto niyo ba magkagulo?”

Naroon sina Dong Malonzo, Atty. Mike Villamayor, at iba pa.

Column: GLINT by Pastor Joe Tacadena: “The Cry for Daddy”

"May everyone hearten to his innate cry for the Supreme Father in our lives, so that we can have greater peace, love and power than what we used to have as self-reliant, self-made and proud people…This is how we can better understand God, who for His love for us has given us His very Son, so that we will no longer be alienated to Him. By believing in His Son Jesus, we can be empowered to be God’s children."

For two years, when the late night nursing was starting to exhaust my loving wife Del, I knew it was time for me to take over. At least, for the meantime.

Jhesed, our youngest kid, was then still accustomed to waking up five to six times from night to dawn. His craving for a newly prepared milk and the occasional call to pee were the culprits.

But I am a mega-sleeper, particularly after a hard day’s work. You guessed it. I didn’t look forward to being awakened randomly and at many times during the wee hours of the night.

“I don’t know how you do it,” I often said to Del.  After all, she worked harder than me, and has more daily pressures. But she is more energetic to care for our kids.

I confess I balked at the unholy hour feedings partly because Jhesed always awoke crying, “Mama, dede!”

Of course, I’m not competing with my wife. But I admit I feel like a second-rate, trying hard copy cat mom. And certainly, not a good one at that.

In fact, I even started out more as a hindrance than a help. Jhesed’s cries were not enough to wake me up although only my wife separates him from me on our family-sized bed.

I eventually decided to sleep just beside our child, and prayed that I become more sensitive to him.  I also requested my wife to nudge me with her elbow whenever I failed to respond immediately to our child’s call.

The elbow and the relentless cries for “mama” were not pleasant motivators. With the first whimpers, I begun rationalizing, and then, murmuring. “Why does Jhesed have to continue sucking milk when he’s already about two years old? Why do I have to volunteer doing this when Del could do it best?”

But still, the cry for Mama” went on. Yawning, I sat up on bed and groped for the milk some two arms away. I took a deep breath and announced hopefully, “Jhesed, papa’s here. Just wait a minute.”

To my pleasant surprise, Jhesed fell silent.

“Well, that wasn’t so hard.” I thought, and continued preparing his milk.

But then, “Mama!” His cry blasted forth with renewed vigor. Startled, I stopped then sighed. I tapped his shoulder and whispered, “Jhesed, just wait.”

Excitement hit me, when as a response, my third child opened his eyes to look at me. Though the light was turned off, the full moon and the rays of the Meralco post lamp outside were clearly illuminating our second floor master’s bedroom. Our eyes meet. Suspense grew inside me when he gave a cute, impish smile.

But just as suddenly, he cried out again, “Mmammmmaaaa! Dede!” shattering my eardrums as well as my ego. It was good that after I gave him his milk, he fell silent.

Day after day, bottle after bottle, I pushed on through the cries for “Mama” – dutifully, if not lovingly. Soon, however, I began to be sensitive to Jhesed’s cries.

I also begun to enjoy serving him. Before long, I was even anticipating for that slight, uneasy move, or simplest whimper to feed him early on.

On sentimental nights, I would embrace my kid and whisper to him some reassuring words, that his dad loves him.  Yes, all of these amidst the soft pants and cries for “Mama!”

And then late one night, it happened.

Lost in heavy sleep, I stirred as a strange sound tapped lightly on my ear. It wasn’t a cry. It was more of a whisper.

“Pa-pa…"

My eyes flickered open. Closed again. Shifting to my left, my head tilted back to get a clear glimpse of my child.

“Pa-paa!”

“Pa-ppaaaa!”

Bold and full-throated, the small voice pierced the dark morning like the horns of a triumphant politician in the recent election.

My eyes exploded open. I was even more surprised to see my child gazing at me. And smiling!

“Papa,” he whispered. “Papa. Dede”

Half-lurching from bed, I scooped Jhesed in my arms. “That’s my son! I blurted out. “That’s my son!”

“What’s going on?” Del mumbled sleepily. “What’s the noise about?”

Sheepishly, I lowered Jhesed back on his place. My child appeared already wide awake at that time, but was relaxed. Concealing my excitement, I replied, “Nothing. I was just talking to Jhesed.”

I begun to prepare his milk. I don’t know how many times I had been doing that. But this time, it was different. It was Jhesed, anticipating on his father’s service.

After receiving the bottle of milk, my child moved closer to me. He extended his left arm to my cheeks as if to appreciate what I’ve done. I tell you. It felt so good. Really good.

Indeed, my soul was impressed that night when I first heard my son call me “Papa.”

My joy came partly from my waiting so long for him to acknowledge the bond between us. And yet, when I had rejoiced fully, and both he and Del were asleep again, I lay in bed staring at the stars visible from my view.

I was gripped by something deeper. I was identifying with the cry of my son. In his baby’s voice, I heard something I recognized in myself.

I believe every man and woman pants for the cry from the depths of his soul. It’s the most basic cry for security, safety and love amidst a dark and lonely world.

It cries, “Save me, Father God!”

I remember someone wrote, “Nothing will help you understand the love of God like having a child of your own.”  I think he’s right.

May we fathers and mothers dare to listen to the cry for “Papa” in our own hearts so we can recognize it in our own kids and respond in love.

May everyone hearten to his innate cry for the Supreme Father in our lives, so that we can have greater peace, love and power than what we used to have as self-reliant, self-made and proud people.

This is how we can better understand God, who for His love for us has given us His very Son, so that we will no longer be alienated to Him. By believing in His Son Jesus, we can be empowered to be God’s children. Whereby we cry, “Abba, Father!” (1 John 1:12)

First time ko.

How would one encourage nonreaders to read books about something so ancient?

The remains of two fatalities in last Friday's sinking of a roll-on roll off vessel that sank off Masbate were brought to Metro Manila over the weekend.

The remains of Carlota Senga, 58, and Erlinda Julbitado, 59, were brought to separate sites, radio dzBB reported early Monday, June 17.

Senga's remains were brought to Marikina City while those of Julbitado were brought to Pasig City.

Both fatalities were on their way to the blessing of a house at the time of the tragedy, the report said.

The MV Lady of Carmel sank in what seemed like less than a minute amid good weather off Masbate Friday. At least seven people remain missing.

Ship captain Lauro Mateo said he gave the order to abandon ship after learning the ship was sinking, and called sister ship MV Lady of Rosary.

But he denied claims by some passengers the crew was asleep at the time.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard said they are focusing their investigation on how some passengers who were not on the manifest got on board the vessel, even if there was no overloading. —KG, GMA News

Lagi mo akong inaaya
sa barberyahan ni Mang Pidong,

Kahit hindi magpapagupit
basta ikaw ay makalapit

sa huntahan ng matatanda,
natutuwa kang nakamasid.

“Boyet buhok mo’y mahaba na,
halika’t puputulan ko na!”

Lagi nang biro ni Mang Pidong
sa anyaya niyang pabulong.

“Maikli pa po ang buhok ko”
ang sagot ni Boyet na bibo.

“Ay, bakit ka laging narito,
kung di sa buhok ang pakay mo?”

“Sa dama po na nilalaro
ng mga tambay at barbero.

Kaya ba malaki ang tiyan
ng mga naglalaro nito

Ay dahil laging sumisigaw
ng kain, kain, kung nanalo?”

Nagtawanan ang mga miron
dahil sa inosenteng tanong.

“Boyet ang dama’y laro lamang,
Ang labanan ay pautakan.

Kung nais itong matutuhan,
Iyong mga mata’y talasan.

At kung matalo pagkaminsan,
Tanggapin ng may kababaan.”

Ikaw ay pumanaw ngunit di lumisan,
Aking tinatanaw
"Huli Mong Paalam,"
Sa puso't isipan ang Iyong iniwan,
Tunay mong minahal,
ating Inang Bayan.

Maraming na-aklat
hindi man nabuklat;
Laging binibigkas ay ang Iyong wakas.
Dugo mong tumagas sabi ay nagmulat,
Sa aking pagsipat
bayani kang tapat.

Sa kulang kong aral, abot ng isipan
Lakas mo't paglaban ay pagsulat lamang;
Di ka man sumigaw nagbuhat ng kamay,
Iyong sinugatan ang mga kaaway.

Minahal mo’t liyag
amin ngayong yakap,
Sa dusa at hirap pa rin, nakasadlak;
Ang Iyong pangarap
paglayang hinangad,
Kaya ay naganap o aming tinupad?

Pag-asa ng bayan ay ang kabataan,
Noon ba ay kantyaw o paghamon lamang;
Sino at nasaan, mga winikaan
Ang Iyong tinuran, yata, ay sinayang.

Kung bawa't pagbigkas ng Iyong himakas,
Damahin ng lahat ang diwa at lakas.
Buhay ma’y tumakas hindi ka nagwakas,
Dumaloy ang ugat, sa bayan mong liyag. #

Antipolo is fast becoming known for its sports heroes.

Fifteen-year-old Eleanor Christine Inlayo won the gold medal in women's badminton doubles at the Philippine National Games held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The third year high school student from Angels of Mary School bested her opponents from all over the country to win the women's doubles badminton open category. She emerged as champion in the week-long tournament which ended first week of June.

Before this, she competed at the Philippine Badminton Ranking System (PBaRS) tournament held at Pampanga last May 3 to 5 where she emerged champion in the under-19 girls doubles category and won the silver in the under-17 mixed doubles category.

Just after the PBaRS tournament she competed at the Ming Ramos Youth Cup also held at the Rizal Memorial Stadium last May 7 to 11 where she also bagged the championship trophy in the under-17 girls doubles category and the under-19 women’s doubles category.

“I've been playing badminton ever since I was a child because of my mom who is also a badminton player. It has always been my dream to compete in the SEA Games and even in Olympics not just to make my family proud as well as the country but especially Antipolo City where I grew up in,” said Inlayo.

The Antipolo badminton wonder started playing in tournaments in grade 5 and gathered various championship trophy since then. She is now the PBaRS' number 1 ranked badminton player in the country in two age groups in the girls' and mixed doubles.

Inlayo leaves the country this coming July 5 to compete at the month-long Yonex Open with stops in Canada, New York and Los Angeles, California. (Antipolo Public Information Office)

THERE was no agreement to “merge” the Leyte Provincial Government-led Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals and the Tacloban City Government’s Sangyaw Festival, also known as The Parade of Lights, said Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla.

“It cannot be called a merger because as far as I know, there was no agreement between our organization and the City Government [of Tacloban]. We only applied a permit for a festival parade around the city’s main streets to be held on June 29 and it was granted. It just so happened that their event is on the same day, but will be held in the evening,” said Petilla, who heads the Pintados-Kasadyaan Festival of Festivals 2013, during Friday’s grand opening of the festival park at the RTR Plaza.

She said, though, that both groups are amenable to the merger. “It’s just putting two different celebrations in one day…we will have our street parade in the morning and their activity in the evening.”

Dinia "Indeng" Sanchez sa 'Eat Bulaga' dabarkads dahil nanalo ang kanyang barangay sa "One for All, All for One Bayanihan of the People" para sa buwan ng Mayo 2013.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has scrapped the plan to pilot test the automated voting system during the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls in October.

Comelec Chairman Sixto Brillantes, in an interview, said the en banc already decided not to push through with the plan to automate some selected cities in the National Capital Region during the October 28 polls due to lack of time.

“Hindi na kami mag automate. Nag desisyon na kami. [We will not automate, we have decided.] It was a consensus. Wala naman nag insist [No one insisted],” he said.

“Wala ng time tiyaka magastos masyado pag automated. [We don't have time and it's too expensive to automate.] We need time,” added Brillantes.

The Comelec also released the Calendar of Activities for the October 28 polls on Wednesday.

Based on Comelec Resolution 9715, the period for the filing of the Certificates of Candidacy (COCs) is scheduled on October 15 to 17.

During the election period, the Comelec is again set to impose a nationwide gun ban as well as appointment bans on government offices.

On Monday, the poll body already announced that the registration period for the Barangay and SK polls is from July 22 to 31.
